Gilbough Program Prader-Willi FAQs

Q. Why Gilbough?

A. Gilbough has been serving the PWSpopulation since 1980. Our partnership with Tufts-New England Medical Center assures that our residents receive nationally recognized treatment with the most innovative and state-of-the-art medical and therapeutic supports available. Join this with our vocational, recreational, and residential services, and you have a winning combination!

Q. Does Gilbough accept out of state referrals?

A. In a word: YES. We have residents from several states, and are interested in speaking to referring agencies from your state.
Q. How does Gilbough keep parents in the communication loop?

A. Maintaining ongoing communication with family members is a critical aspect of the care provided in the Gilbough Program. In addition to regular communication opportunities such as planning meetings, parent satisfaction surveys and an annual “all”parent meeting, families receive regular phone and face-to-face contact with their child’s residential supervisor and case manager. Our supervisors regularly initiate contact with family members to keep them informed of their child’s progress, as well as to coordinate family activities such as trips home or agency/family events. House Supervisors are also available to respond to calls from family members. The Director of Adult Services is available to answer questions and address any concerns that parents may have about their child.
Q. What kind of educational/vocational opportunities are available for my son/daughter?

A. We provide a wide range of work, educational, and volunteer opportunities in the community, each with a customized level of support. Many of our adults also participate in local day-habilitation programs that enable them to socialize, volunteer, work, and enjoy many of the Cape Cod sights and sounds on local day trips. For those serious about pursuing further vocational or education opportunities, the local Cape Cod Community College offers a special program called Project Forward. Project Forward trains its students in retail, computers, day care, and maintenance jobs as well as helps them locate a job at the end of their training. They also have a mentorship program designed to grow tomorrow’s future leaders.

Q. How does Gilbough help its residents reach their goal weights?

A. Gilbough has a copyrighted, 5-week cycling menu plan created with input from our residents, based on the Prader-Willi Food Pyramid. This menu plan allows residents to eat “normal” foods in healthy proportions with items like veggie lasagna rollups, smoothies, muffins, and more! Of course exercise is a component of any healthy weight loss program, so look below for our recreational activities.

Q. What social and recreational activities do Gilbough residents enjoy?

A. Cap Cod is a wonderful place to live! We have dances, healthy cookouts, and seasonal parties, too. We have beautiful beaches, ponds, nature trails, parks, museums, festivals, and concerts. And that’s just the beginning! Gilbough takes part in many Special Olympics activities including swimming, fishing, track & field, and bowling. We also have our own song and dance troupe.
