Prader-Willi Diet

Greater food options for better health

Since 1980 Latham Centers, Inc has been on the cutting edge of developing services to support individuals with Prader-Willi Syndrome. Recognizing the role of nutrition and lifestyle in aiding individuals, families and providers effectively manage the symptoms of PWS; Latham Centers has developed an array of tools and interventions.

The PWS diet was developed with the help of licensed nutritionists, health care and human service professionals as well as the individuals with PWS. The goal of the diet is to give individuals greater control over what they eat, with more options for making it more healthy and delicious.

The PWS diet/menu is based on the PWS food pyramid and a correlation between the individual’s body weight and their daily caloric intake. The diet consists of five weeks of daily menus that offer three balanced meals that are nutritious, calorie controlled, and most importantly, appetizing to the individuals. The diet/menu includes weekly and daily portion-specific menu planners as well as a wide array of easy-to-make recipes. Some of the menu items include, smoothies, homemade muffins, seafood salad, vegetable and feta pizza, and meatloaf with red beans and rice to name a few of the favorites. It also offers samples of PWS-friendly menu items from several popular restaurants.

Does the PWS diet work? You bet it does! At the end the first six months of use, the average weight loss was six pounds, and during that time seven individuals achieved their goal weight and another seven were within 10 pounds of their goal weight.
Not only are the individuals achieving weight loss, there have been other benefits as well. We have observed improved health, decrease in respiratory symptoms, and decreased insulin dependency for our diabetic individuals. Their self-esteem has improved, and most importantly, they enjoy it. As one individual put it, “I feel like I’m eating like a normal person.”

The PWS diet, along with dietary consultation services, is available for a reasonable fee to families, schools and other institutions caring for individuals with PWS.
